SHARON TERRIZZI - ARTIST STATEMENT
Sharon is a contemporary NZ artist based in Kerikeri Northland.
Using traditional methods, she uses clay to create figurative earthenware that has been contemporised in form and composition, emphasizing the hand-made aspect of each piece. Patterns and multiples carry a significant weight in her recent work, which validate an expectation of familiarity, and often refer to those that have a historical context.
As part of her process production is important. Creating work many times over has a benefit of “mastering her craft”, and as each piece evolves, she continually strives for work that reflects its own eminence.
Sharons inspiration often comes from the observation of social behaviour through the media and of those around her. As she hand fabricates each piece she finds something very basic in the making, and feels the work is as much about process as it is about human character.
